FAQs
Chimney Sweeping questions, answered
How often should my chimney be swept?
Solid fuel and wood-burning appliances should be swept at least once a year, ideally before the start of the heating season; if you burn wood or peat every day through the winter, twice a year is safer.
Do you sweep oil-fired and gas flues too?
Our main work is open fires and wood-burning/multi-fuel stoves. Oil and gas appliances have their own servicing requirements, and we're happy to advise or point you to the right trade if that's what you need.
How much mess does a sweep make?
None that you'll notice. We work with dust sheets and a proper industrial vacuum, so soot and debris are contained and cleared before we leave.
How long does a sweep take?
A straightforward sweep usually takes 30-45 minutes. If the flue hasn't been swept in a while, or there's a bird nest or heavy tar build-up, it can take longer.
What's the difference between rod-and-brush and power sweeping?
Rod-and-brush is the traditional method and works well for most flues. Power sweeping uses a rotating head and is better for stubborn creosote or glazed tar build-up that a standard brush can't shift.
Do I need to be home during the sweep?
Yes, someone needs to let us in and show us the fireplace or stove, but you don't need to do anything else while we work.
Will you check for bird nests and blockages?
Yes, every sweep includes a check for nests, debris and any obstruction in the flue, and we'll remove what we find as part of the job.
Do you give a certificate after the sweep?
We can provide written confirmation of the sweep for insurance or home-sale purposes on request.
What does a chimney sweep cost?
Our average charge is around £40 for a standard sweep; the exact price depends on the appliance and how accessible the flue is.
Can a dirty chimney cause a house fire?
Yes. Built-up creosote and tar are highly flammable and are one of the most common causes of chimney fires, which is exactly what regular sweeping prevents.
Do you cover rural and farm properties as well as towns?
Yes, we cover town centres and the surrounding rural townlands across our service area.
